Sorry, but the 4th of July took precedence over thoroughly following the MiLB games. This is a shortened version.

Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Houston) 7 – OKC Comets 5 – 5 ½ innings

Game was delayed in the bottom of the 6th due to inclement weather and eventually called.  The game went long enough for a game.

RHSP Ryder Ryan took the mound for OKC and delivered a HR to the first batter he faced.  Two singles and a 3-run HR gave the Space Cowboys a 4-0 lead after 4 batters faced.

In the bottom of the 2nd, 3B Ryan Fitzgerald singled and moved to 3rd when LF Ryan Ward reached on an error and moved to 2nd1B James Tibbs III hit a SF for Fitzgerald to score and Ward to 3rd.  Ward scored on a ground out.

Sugar Land scored a solo run in the 3rd off Ryder Ryan on a BB, single with runner to 3rd, and a SF.

RHRP Jerming Rosario relieved Ryan in the 4th. Rosario walked the first batter he faced and hit the next two.  A WP brought home a run, with the other base runners moving up a base. The 7th run came home on a ground ball.

In the 5th, SS Noah Miller hit his 9th HR, and back to back doubles by RF Zach Ehrhard (18) and CF Alek Thomas (4).

RHRP Jose Rodriguez retired the side in the 5th and got the first out in the 6thRHRP Chayce McDermott got the final two outs in the 6th.  Then the rains came, and the umpires eventually called the game.

Ryan Fitzgerald was the only OKC batter with 2 hits.  Noah Miller’s HR and Zach Ehrhard’s and Alek Thomas’ doubles were the only XBH.

Tulsa Drillers 10 – Wichita Wind Surge (Minnesota) 2

CF Kendall George returned from his rehab assignment to start for Tulsa.  1B Joe Vetrano went on the IL to make room for George.

CF Mike Sirota did not play in this one, so the streak stands at 67.  But 3B Jake Gelof did play and he walked to reach base safely in his 42nd consecutive game.

LHRP Myles Caba was the opener for RHSP Patrick Copen.  Caba pitched a scoreless 1st, but when he walked the first two batters in the 2nd, Copen was summoned in.  Copen struck out the 1st batter, but the two runners pulled off a double steal, and the following batter hit a SF for a 1-0 lead.  After a BB, Copen got the final out of the inning.

Tulsa took the lead in the top of the 4th when RF Josue De Paula doubled (26), and DH Zyhir Hope hit a one out 2-run HR (16).

In the 5th, 2B Taylor Young singled and stole 2nd.  Young scored when SS Sean McLain hit an RBI single.

The Drillers scored another in the 6th when LF Kole Myers hit a one out single and continued to second on a fielding error.  Myers scored on McLain’s 6th double.

Copen pitched 3.0 additional innings without allowing a hit.  He retired 9 of the last 10 batters he faced, only allowing a BB.  This was a welcome positive game from Copen.

RHRP Lucas Wepf relieved Copen in the 6th and pitched a scoreless inning.

In the 7th, JDP singled.  With one out, Hope drew a BB, and with 2 outs, Myers singled to load the bases.  C Frank Rodriguez singled to score JDP and the bases remained loaded.  The Drillers scored 2 more when Young was HBP and McLain walked.

Wepf gave up a HR in the 7th for the final Wind Surge run.

The Drillers finished up the scoring with 3 in the 8th.  JDP and 3B Jake Gelof each drew a BB.  Hope doubled to score JDP with Gelof reaching 3rd1B Chris Newell singled to score Gelof with Hope stopping at 3rd.  Hope scored on a SF from Rodriguez.

RHSP Brooks Auger had some issues with the long ball in this one.  He gave up a 2 out solo HR in the 1st, and a 1 out 2-run HR giving the TinCaps a 3-0 lead.

GL tied it up in the 4th3B Chase Harlan drew a BB and was WP to 2nd.  With 1 out, RF Jose Meza doubled (9) to score Harlan.   With 2 out, DH Cameron Decker reached base on an error with Meza scoring and Decker reaching 2nd.  Decker scored on C Victor Rodrigues’ RBI single.

GL went out in front in the 8th inning.  LF Samuel Munoz opened with a single.  With one out, Rodrigues hit an RBI double (8) and scored when CF Charles Davalan singled.

The teams went into extra innings tied up at 5-5.  Great Lakes would score in each of the next four innings, only to be matched by Ft. Wayne.  GL scored another in the 14th inning, but Ft, Wayne scored a pair in the walkoff win.

Box Score

Fresno Grizzlies (Colorado) 13 – Ontario Tower Buzzers 4

The Ontario pitchers had an off night, and that is putting it kindly.

The offense also took the night off, scoring 4 runs on 7 hits, with only 1 XBH, Ching-Hsien Ko and a triple (1).

Ontario scored one in the 3rdC Conner O’Neal walked and 2B Kellon Lindsey reached on catcher’s interference.  CF Jaron Elkins drove O’Neal home with a single.

Not much positive emanated from this game.

  • Joendry Vargas – 3-5, 1 run, 2 RBI
  • Ching-Hsien Ko – 1 BB, 1 run, triple (1)

Box Score

ACL Padres 5 – ACL Dodgers 4 – 7 innings

RHSP Tommy Case had a decent 4.0 innings.  He allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, but only 1 BB, with 5 K.  I like the 1 BB.

Down 2-1, the ACL Dodgers put up 3 in the 6th to take the lead.  RF Jhon Gil led off with a double (2).  DH Reyli Mariano reached base on a throwing error and Gil scored.  2B Elias Medina slugged a 2-run HR (2).

Relief pitching could not hold the lead as the Padres scored 3 in the bottom of the 6th to retake the lead and eventual win.

  • Elias Medina – 2-4, 1 run, 2 RBI, HR (2)
  • Moises Bolivar – 2-3, 1 run
  • Abel Lorenzo – 2-3

Can Sheehan throw a fastball down in the zone or on a corner? Won’t happen for him until that becomes consistent

Apparently not. He looked good for two innings. Then returned to being Sheehan. Jonathan Hernandez accepted his outright assignment to OKC Woo-Suk Go traded by the Tigers to the Twins for cash.

With the disclaimer that we really can’t rely on press releases about injured players—I am not comfortable to just sit back and say that Snell and/or Glasnow will really be ready for October. Also I think that Ohtani is NOT a robot. So no one wants to give up all those prospects plus Sheehan for rental of Skubal. And plus look how successful Vargas, Busch etc are this year. Well we are 14 games up, and best record in baseball WITHOUT all those guys we let get away. True we are great now, but still could use help for playoffs.

I would be very surprised if we DON’T sign a frontline starter by the deadline.

    Boook it!!!

    • Bluto4d agoReply

I, for one, I think it’s about 10 times likely we trade a starter than sign a starter.

Miggy Vargas entered Saturday with a slash line of .248/.359/.495, a career-high 20 home runs, 16 doubles, 58 runs scored, 55 RBIs, 51 walks against 63 strikeouts and a career-high 11 stolen bases. Vargas’ defense has been solid as the team’s regular third baseman, becoming the first White Sox All-Star at the position since Joe Crede in 2008 and the sixth third baseman overall. Vargas is the seventh Cuban-born player in club history to be selected an All-Star and the first since Luis Robert Jr. in ‘23.

You’re right Bear, she wasn’t quite as bad what time I had it off mute! Too bad you can’t select your own personal choice for play by play! I too would take neverett and Monday. I did get tired of Joe Davis and Karros arguing about challenging pitches! Nelson got over excited about a couple of long outs last night. They actually weren’t even close to going out! I guess we don’t all agree on who’s good and who’s not. Gimme neverett and Monday 1. Davis and Orel2. Nelson and Karros 3. I’ve said it before. I hope my granddaughter’s get the same opportunities as Mendoza has has received. It’s never been about her being a woman. It’s simply that I don’t enjoy listening to her. But there are plenty of men that broadcast games in every sport who suck!

By the way, if anyone has been wanting to go to a Dodger game, but hasn’t because tic are so expensive, today’s a great day to go!

The cheapest ticket on Stubhub to get in is $32, for the 4:30pm game.

This may or may not have anything to do with Mexico/England playing at 5pm.

  11. Bluto4d ago

    Per Woo:

Edwin Díaz was in good spirits after facing hitters, saying he feels good to go on a rehab assignment and is ready once the Dodgers clear it. Doesn’t have an exact timetable but his return could come relatively soon after the ASB.

Kiké Hernández was one of those batters. Dodgers have been optimistic about Kiké’s recovery progress so far. This is an encouraging development.

    Per Harris:

Lots of guys resting today. No Muncy, Tucker, Freeland, Rushing.

    Per Heyman:

    https://nypost.com/2026/07/01/sports/tarik-skubals-future-isnt-in-detroit-but-where-he-will-land-is-open-question/

Heyman ranks near the bottom of the guys I would listen too.

Considering Busch, Vargas, and now Ruiz success, maybe trading with the Dodgers becomes more popular. There are a few others as well that have done well.

  14. philjones5d ago

Jess Mendoza has afforded me an opportunity to explore other broadcast options for the last 3 games and today.

It eliminates my routine of recording games so I can watch them later and skip the commercials.

So I’ve been watching in real time on mute, while listening to the Sirius Radio audio.

As I mentioned, I really enjoyed Rick Monday and Steven Nelson on Friday.

Last night I decided to try the Pud’s radio crew. I couldn’t do the TV crew. I can’t stand Don Orcillo and Mudcat Grant.

I really enjoyed some guy named Jesse Agler and Tony Gwynn Jr. Very nicely paced broadcast, with good information, insight and humor. And not over-the-top homecookin.

It was a treat the last 2 games to not get non-stop chatter and especially not getting the predicting, second-guessing and over analysis of pitch selections. John Smoltz is by far the worst and Orel isnt far behind.

What is it? NBC tonight for those of us not on the SportsNet LA connection?

I have my fingers crossed for Emmit. He needs a good outing.

    • Bear5d agoReply

Mendoza wasn’t as chatty last night with Nelson in the booth instead of Davis, but she still sucks begonias. Davis had a hell of a time in Chicago. At one point, the infielders could not see the ball due to fog. Shades of old San Francisco. The next 3 games I have to watch on the Rockies channel, which means they will be on mute. Drew Goodman is the worst announcer in the league. At what I pay per year for MLB.TV, there should be no such thing as blackouts or games farmed out to pay networks. The HR derby is on Netflix.

Watched a little of Great Lakes today. Harlan, Davalan, Morales & Quintero is quite a quartet.

  17. Dodgerdad5d ago

My bad Bear, I totally forgot about mookie’s double. Case in point, mookie is fine! Wrobleski did get snubbed, but as I said, he was a victim of his own team. Somebody will skip pitching in the game opening up the door for him. That’s if he doesn’t pitch right before the all star game.

I’m sure we don’t have all the information concerning Snell and Glasnow. That’s why I believe it’s 50-50 chance the Dodgers acquire a starter. Along with the possibility Sssaki continues his backward progression! It probably depends on the Dodgers and if they don’t mind giving Detroit a couple of top prospects and being comfortable in knowing that they won’t sign Skubal in the offseason. Can’t see them giving Skubal a 8-10 year contract! Maybe a contract similar to Tuckers? I’m sure the Mets will go all out for Skubal. Help yourself cohen! But if Sheehan doesn’t get better in tonight’s start, or his next start, with sasucki( as Bear calls him) being awful, I really do believe that AF goes and gets a starter. And yes, the Joe Ryan talk is still out there.

Sweep the pads tonight! Isn’t it great when tatis and Manny are silent?

    • SimonKiller5d agoReply

Don’t even really care about the result, but want to see Sheehan look good and comfortable out there. We need him. He’s essentially our #4 starter right now.

I trust Sasaki to pitch well about as much as I trust my exe-wife. He is a deer in the headlight. Skenes made the All-Star team, but he sure does not deserve it. 6-8, 3.68 ERA.

  18. philjones5d ago

It’s still very satisfying to beat the Puds. I’m especially enjoying watching Machado hit a buck-eighty. Funny how we don’t see all that hot-dogging anymore and his “hey, look at me” bullshit.

He just runs out of bat nowadays at any well placed breaking ball down and away.

He’s pushing 34 and while he will have an occasional moment, he looks about done to me. I certainly hope so.

Couldn’t happen soon enough and to a bigger A-hole.

So, Fangraphs has a new metric to evaluate minor league prospects! It’s an economic metric at its core, so I find it interesting and novel.

Basically, the idea is to measure worth / value in a realm of escalating FA salaries and condensed minor league rosters and spaces. It’s a move from evaluating systems based mostly on the aggregate value of individuals and instead including a weighting for deep systems that can produce value broadly. So! three key principles: cumulative war, surplus value ($$$ potentially saved with a prospect instead of FA at similar production levels) and upside (% of becoming elite)

Fret not, Dodgers still a top-ranking system!

“There’s just nothing to complain about!“

    Sure there is.

Though complain is a little strong I suppose. There are things to point out.

There appears to be no SP in the pipeline quite ready to step up and help during the summer months. Then there’s Sasaki. And Sheehan. Though Sheehan has looked good at times his 5 ERA and -0.1 WAR kinda sums up his season. The SP in general has been statistically quite good. Can it last to November? Who knows, but at an average of 5.2 IP per start, a seemingly low number to older fans, it sure feels like it should. You never know though. Ohtani, even being the stud he obviously is, sure appears to be working hard. He will put up the overall WAR again though his oWAR will be down from his previous two seasons. Sure hope he and Yamamoto remain standing for another 100 games or so.

I wonder how Glasnow and Snell’s vacations are going.

        From AI

Gavin Stone is currently on the 60-day injured list and shut down from throwing due to recurring soreness in his surgically repaired right shoulder. He is limited to flat-ground catch and faces an uncertain timeline for returning to the mound.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitching prospect River Ryan is currently on the 7-day injured list for Triple-A Oklahoma City with a right hamstring strain. The organization considers the injury “not overly serious”. He is currently cleared to throw on flat ground but cannot yet pitch off a mound.Ryan originally suffered the injury during a Triple-A start. This is his second stint on the minor-league injured list this season for a hamstring issue. Because this follows his recovery from major Tommy John surgery, the Dodgers are exercising extreme caution regarding his buildup and workload rather than rushing him to the major-league

“The Dodgers are set to select the contract of catcher Eliezer Alfonzo Jr. from Triple-A, according to reporter Georgeny Perez and El Extrabase’s Daniel Alvarez-Montes. Los Angeles already has an open space for Alfonzo on its 40-man roster, and The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya reports that catcher Chuckie Robinson is being optioned to Triple-A to make room on the 26-man roster”.

“Alfonzo will be making his MLB debut whenever he appears in a game. The 26-year-old is a veteran of nine minor league seasons, all in the Tigers farm system before he joined the Dodgers as a minor league free agent this past winter. The catcher will continue his family’s baseball history, as his father Eliezer Sr. was a big league backstop with four different clubs from 2006-11.

Over 190 plate appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City, Alfonzo has hit .313/.392/.422 with one home run. This is an improvement over his prior career numbers in the minors, and it could be that the move to the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League has helped Alfonzo to some extent, though he has delivered some solid batting averages and on-base number in the past”.

As of right now it seems Justin Wrob. Is a victim of his own team’s success. It’s hard to argue against Supermoto being included on the all star team roster. There’s probably a very strong possibility he makes it as some pitchers will most likely be making starts right before the all star game. I’m not sure how his current schedule plays out as well. But the young man is sure deserving!

Speaking of Yamamoto, his only flaw seems to be inning number one. So let’s use an opener for the first inning and then let Yamamoto finish it up! Problem solved! I’m still taking him in any big game over anyone else! I believe overall he’s the best pitcher in the game! Just me.

Freddie? Nuff said! Anyone who doesn’t vote for him first ballot should be shot! (Or maybe just castrated!) UNANIMOUS HALL OF FAMER!

Mookie hit some balls really hard with nothing to show for it. He’s just fine!

Congratulations to Andy! With all his trials he’s still an all star! Hope he hits one out in the big game!

Same to Max! Well deserved! Even though some (including me) thought he would never reach this level again! He might not be Arenado defensively, but he’s doing just fine!

The fans would probably revolt, but am I the only one who thinks Ohtani could use a break at this all star game? Won’t happen, but I sure hope if he pitches it’s only for one hitter.

Now Will Klein is looking sharp again! Just when we start to doubt him a little, he looks great last night!

Big news that Evan Phillips is back! Strengthens that bullpen Evan (get it? ) more!

Mason Miller plunked Edman pretty hard last night. Hope he can walk this morning! Speaking of Miller, maybe a chance he gets moved at the deadline? No, he won’t be a Dodger, but someone could get him, but it’s gonna cost an arm and a leg! The friars need a reboot! Tatis seems to have lost his power! Did someone snip some of his hair while he was sleeping? Might be impossible to move him! Boston? The Mets? They could trade Soto back! Just kidding! But they do have a couple of pieces that they could move. That minor league system is pretty bare! So happy for them! Especially Manny . Yamamoto should be ashamed of himself for the way he treated Manny last night!

Emmit pitched 5 decent innings last time out against the padres. Let’s go for 6 today. I’m sure Doc is going to throw Phillips right in there tonight!

Sasaki? The elephant in the room! Doc says he’s not going to miss a start. Ok, maybe he could start missing some bats then!!

Hey AVF…I think that’s true about Hope. He’s on a tear now, which will push his perceived value higher. (I’d have included him in a bid for Buxton….Oh well.)

      So….

      Sheehan + Hope for Skubal?

That could be a starting point. The Dodgers could toss in a guy like Bobby Miller and maybe the Tigers could add a prospect in return. (A young catcher would be nice.)

Not saying it should happen, but I’m sure AF and BG must be pondering the possibilities.

The Dodgers have First-World-Plus problems. The franchise is so strong from top to bottom that it’s hard to conjure a difference-making trade that can utilize the wealth of prospects.

Gracias, Jeff, for another sweet farm report. Seems that Geloff’s progress has been flying below the radar, and Noah Miller continues to flex. Miller’s defense is supposedly platinum-quality so the offense could lift him to The Show. I assume that he’s right behind Freeland and Kim on the depth chart.

Shohei isn’t expected to pitch in the all-star game. Roberts is the manager, and I suspect he might just use him for one or two ABs to please the fans and have him sit.

Tenth all-star game for Freddie! And I’m really happy that the fans honored Trout by voting him to his 11th AS game. A nice comeback after years hampered by injury. He’s not the Trout of yore, but still dangerous.

Buxton will never be a Dodger. He is happy in Minnesota and has a full no-trade. Besides, the Dodgers do not need a center fielder. Detroit want’s MLB ready players for Skubal. Sheehan and Hope not nearly enough to pry him away from the Tigers.

Trading Mason Miller makes a lot of sense given the current state of the Padres. They still have a shot at the wild card, but it’s an uphill climb.

Yes, Preller won’t deal with the Dodgers…. Which contender needs a closer?

The Dodgers’ bullpen is in great shape, and should get better with the return of Phillips and, later, Diaz.

      • Bear5d agoReply

Diaz and Phillips make that pen lethal. The weak link is actually Dreyer. If the Padres were smart, they would eat a ton of Machado’s contract and get him out of town.

    • Bear5d agoReply

Mookie doubled in his first at bat, lost in the fact that Freddie was thrown out at the plate trying to score.

It’s times like this that makes it tough to be a Dodger fan.

There’s just nothing to complain about!

Still trying to figure how JDP/Sirota/Hope/Quintero/Davalan fit into our future OF.

        • Andrew V Forte5d agoReply

Davalan played infield and outfield in college. That’s one solution on your list. Hope is most likely to be traded.

          • SimonKiller5d agoReply

            Agree with both these statements

        • Bluto5d agoReply

According to Katie Woo that isn’t planned to be as much of a problem after the deadline.

RP Evan Phillipa will be activated for today’s game against the Padres. My guess is that RP Paul Gervase will optioned to Oklahoma City.

    • SimonKiller5d agoReply

      Safe guess

    • Andrew V Forte5d agoReply

With the current roster full at 40, someone will have to be DFA or someone will have to be moved to the 60 Day IL when Phillips is activated.

      • Bluto5d agoReply

can’t really have four catchers on the 40, but maybe they wait until Smith is healthy to go back to three.

2026 MLB Draft Preview – CWS Is On the Clock

Draft day is near (Saturday). Will the Dodgers get a difference maker at pick #40? Maybe, maybe not. Dalton Rushing is a difference maker and he was picked as the LAD #1 at #40. LHSP Zach Root (#40) looks like a strong potential difference maker as does Charles Davalan (#41). But their strategy is so muddled because of their lack of a bonus pool. It is not that there will…

Evolution of the Lead-off Hitter

The image of a prototypical lead-off hitter has changed dramatically over the last several years. When I first started watching baseball in the 50’s, most lead of hitters were players with high OBP’s and some speed. Of course, players in the 50’s were evaluated a lot differently than players are today. Pee Wee Reese was actually hit second more than he led off. As a leadoff man, Pee Wee hit…

Alex Freeland Has More Work to do!

I generally don’t have a “favorite” player… kind of like I don’t have a favorite kid… or grandkid. However, I am unashamed to say that Alex Freeland is now my favorite player, simply because of what he has had to overcome to get where he is. I admire his parents for what they did for him, and I admire his indomitable spirit. However, the time has come for Alex to…
