OKC Comets 4 – Sugar Land Space Cowboys (Houston) 3

Just when you thought he might not have anything this year, LHSP Jackson Ferris pitched his best game of the season.  Jackson finished 6.0 complete IP.  He allowed 1 run, on 2 hits (both singles in the 6th), and 2 BB, with 8 K.

Ferris had not allowed a hit through 5.1 IP. With one out in the 6th, he gave up 2 singles.  Both runners pulled off a double steal, and the lead runner then scored on a SF.

Mills walked the next batter and LHRP Ronan Kopp relieved Mills while inheriting the bases loaded.  The first batter he faced hit a SF to tie the game.  Kopp struck out the next batter and got the next to ground out to end the inning.

The Comets came up in the 9th needing a run.  Alfonzo led off with a single.  Austin Gauthier came in to run for Alfonzo.  The next two batters struck out.  3B Noah Miller singled, sending Gauthier to 3rdDH Ryan Ward followed with a run scoring single for the walkoff win.

In the 1st inning, SS Elijah Hainline drew a BB, stole 2nd and scored on a single by LF Zyhir Hope.

RHSP Payton Martin had a small set back in this one.  Martin is not a dominating pitcher, so he is going to have games like today.  He allowed 3 runs from the 1st 5 batters.  A double, ground out, BB, SF, and 2-run HR.

In the 3rd, 2B Sean McLain doubled (5) and scored on Hainline’s single.

LHSP Sterling Patick took the mound.  In the 2nd frame, he gave up 4 singles, but one of those hits was erased by a CS. K.George back at AA. Sirota with a night off. I know Sirota got hit in the wrist by a pitch the other night. Hopefully just a rest night on a deep team.

  3. John5d ago

Isn’t it great going into the trade deadline without a real need. Sure we could use another reliever but it would be more of a luxury than a need. We could use an a depth move for a catcher but If Smith is truly coming back after the all star game again that would be a luxury. I know that I defer from a lot of you but I don’t see the need for a starting pitcher unless one falls in our lap. It’s not always a bad thing to go out and get beat up now and then. It’s good to see how one responds. That takes time and opportunity. Because if a 14 game margin we have time and should give some of the young pitchers a chance to turn it around. With our farm system we are built to be good for some time. I disagree with comments I saw earlier about not being able to sustain this level for a long time. If the owners don’t do something crazy in the upcoming negotiations and our front office remains in tact I hope we maintain a very competitive team for the rest of my days.

A few weeks ago someone on LADT suggested that the Dodgers might go after Skubal mostly to keep him away from the competition.

Dodgerdad stated above: “Henriquez looks pretty darn good lately! Consistency is the key for him.”

I thought I would look at Henriquez’s numbers after his first 13 games.

    Last 9 games – 9.1 IP – 0 runs, 2 hits, 2 BB, 9 K, 0.00 ERA, 1.83 FIP

    Last 14 games – 14.2 IP, 2 runs, 6 hits, 3 BB, 17 K, 1.23 ERA, 1.61 FIP

    Last 20 games – 20.2 IP, 3 runs, 9 hits, 4 BB, 23 K, 1.31 ERA, 1.61 FIP

His last (and only) HR allowed was on April 20. He has inherited 2 runners, and neither scored. He is also getting more late inning (set up) roles of late, and still excelling. He seems to have switched roles with Will Klein.

this combined with Evan Phillips’s return are why any trade for someone like Chapman were nonsensical to me. We’re talking about the most superfluous parts of the postseason bullpen

BTW, I think his home away splits are even more amazing in very recent history

“The Dodgers are set to select the contract of catcher Eliezer Alfonzo Jr. from Triple-A, according to reporter Georgeny Perez and El Extrabase’s Daniel Alvarez-Montes. Los Angeles already has an open space for Alfonzo on its 40-man roster, and The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya reports that catcher Chuckie Robinson is being optioned to Triple-A to make room on the 26-man roster”.

    • Andrew V Forte5d agoReply

“Alfonzo will be making his MLB debut whenever he appears in a game. The 26-year-old is a veteran of nine minor league seasons, all in the Tigers farm system before he joined the Dodgers as a minor league free agent this past winter. The catcher will continue his family’s baseball history, as his father Eliezer Sr. was a big league backstop with four different clubs from 2006-11.

Over 190 plate appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City, Alfonzo has hit .313/.392/.422 with one home run. This is an improvement over his prior career numbers in the minors, and it could be that the move to the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League has helped Alfonzo to some extent, though he has delivered some solid batting averages and on-base number in the past”.

Which team has the better outfield, Dodgers, Comets or Drillers. I’d feel comfortable with any of those teams starting outfielders 1-4 or 5.

  10. philjones6d ago

What a great game. I really love the patience and confidence of this team can show.

They just know there’s a lot of game left when they get down early and go about their business. Make plays, stay in the game and try find a way to run up King’s pitch count or touch him up enough to get him out of the game.

King was owning us through 5, looked a little fatigued in the 6th and thankfully Stammen chose to lift him after Mookie’s walk and Muncy’s single, at 75 pitches, in the 7th.

Time to sprint to the bat rack, boys. we’ve accomplished the mission.

And thanks to Jake Cronenworth, we got the break we needed when that double-play wasn’t turned.

Teo took advantage of it, big time.

Hurt induced a big double-play and Henriques looked like the potential closer I saw in him when I first saw him and Scott made it a little interesting getting behind Taylor before striking out the side.

Scott looks like the anti-Sasaki. Sasaki looks like Bear described. a deer in the headlights, while Scott looks like Dirty Harry.

I avoided Joe and Jess and listened to the Dodger broadcast on Sirius radio, in real time. I was surprised how much better I think Steven Nelson is on the radio paired with Rick Monday. Nelson has an esoteric sense of humor with Orel and Karros, which doesn’t play well for me. Not so much with Monday. It was a good listen which I will do again. I’m not a Karros fan and Jess is Jess.

So Ohtani had biceps pain that led to Miggy pinch hitting for him?

    • Bear6d agoReply

Yes, that was the reason Miggy PH. Nelson knows better than to try humor on Monday. He is pretty much a no-nonsense kind of analyst. He does not even try to correct poor Charlie Steiner, who is prone to many broadcasting mistakes at his age and with his recent illness. I still prefer Neverett.

Teams aren’t exactly jumping at the opportunity to make a trade with the Dodgers. ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan went as far as to say that opposing general managers are “terrified” to make a deal with Friedman and the Dodgers with the deadline approaching.

“I think if you give them sodium pentothal, they would say that they’re terrified of making a trade with him,” Passan said on 97.1 The Fan. “Because he wins most of them and he’s done really well. I think more than anything, they are wary that the Dodgers are very, very good at keeping the guys who turn out to be solid and getting rid of the guys who don’t.

    • Bumsrap6d agoReply

The Rays are probably in that same trade caution category.

      • Jeff Dominique6d agoReply

    • Jeff Dominique6d agoReply

I 100% agree with Passan. AF does not lose trades, and selling teams are not going to trade their most saleable players to the Dodgers without a large overpay. AF will not do that.

    • Bluto5d agoReply

this is why upcoming trade window is gonna be so interesting.

It reports are to be believed, and the Dodgers are seeking nontraditional trades like prospect for prospect. It’s gonna be a whole new game of chicken about how much confidence other teams have in their evaluatory ability contra the Dodgers.

it’s gonna be both fun and interesting, again if reports are true, and I can’t wait

      Bear,

Horah! back at ya . 28 years Navy Chief. Retired 1991.

Question: Why isn’t Alfonzo backing up Rushing? He’s hitting.308/800+OPS in OKC, Chuckie is hitting.095 and doesn’t have a positive OPS. Lol

      • Bear6d agoReply

My guess is zero MLB experience. He is four years younger than Robinson, but Robinson is a much better game caller. Pitcher’s love pitching to Chuckie. They transferred Savala to the Development list and brought up Lockwood-Powell to back up Alonzo. Alonzo is not on the 40-man.

      • Jeff Dominique6d agoReply

Because he is not as good as a game manager or working with the pitchers. Alfonzo has aleays been able to hit, and Detroit did not see him as a good enough catcher to protect. The purpose of a backup catcher is to work with the pitchers and game manage. Chuckie does a very good job of that. I prefer Ben Rortvedt who cannot hit with Alfonzo but is a fantastic game manager.

        • Jeff Dominique6d agoReply

Well, once again I am wrong. Eliézer Alfonzo is getting his contract purchased. Chuckie is being optioned.

          • Daytona Jack6d agoReply

Chuckie and his .095 BA is pretty worthless and the the last few bunts turned into infield popups, defense not withstanding.

Maybe AF is monitoring this site and making decisions based on our comments. He could do worse. Alfonzo seems to be handling the comets staff quite well and if he could platoon with Rushing against lefties. Are ya listening AF?

            • Jeff Dominique5d agoReply

You and I think totally different. I do not care what a backup catcher hits, much less a backup backup catcher. All I care about is whether he can work well with the pitchers. Chuckie got multiple kudos from the pitchers. That was his job. Maybe AF should just concentrate on who the best hitters are and ignore whether they can play defense.

My guess is that many here will turn on Alfonzo as they did on Miggy Ro (when first traded), Kim, Freeland, Busch, Vargas, and Pages. Too few look at the totality of a player’s skill level. Some are born to hit, some are born to defend. And everyone expects AF to get those that excel at both and only giving up rookie level players in return.

Happy 4th of July everyone! Hope everyone has a great day and the whole country will celebrate with each other! We are so blessed to be here!

Michael King made the Dodgers high octane offense look pedestrian for five innings last night. He looked to tire in the sixth. No excuses, no win for the friars! Teo did not miss that first pitch! He looked like he was playing for the 2017 aaaaasssstros, like he knew what was coming! Announcers use the term “ Ambush “ ( which I hate!). But an error opened the door, and the Dodgers took advantage of it. Great win!

Henriquez looks pretty darn good lately! Consistency is the key for him.

Tanner Scott has outstanding numbers! My only concern is he seems to have too many 3 ball counts in his appearances. He isn’t walking anybody, but he does make it interesting at times.

While King was brilliant for 5-6 innings, Ohtani seemed to struggle from the beginning. The strikeouts are plenty, but the pitch count and command are not great. Nevertheless, it’s considered a quality start. I wonder how much doing both pitching and hitting is going to wear on him? Looked exhausted by the end of his night.

One Padre I wouldn’t mind having on the Dodgers? Gavin Sheets. He seems to thrive against the Dodgers. I know, first base is occupied, but Sheets is a very nice player. Trade him to Cleveland !

If the Dodgers win tonight,(Sasaki can’t pitch again!) The padres will be in dire straits regarding the division, NO CHANCE! With the the teams in the central and the east having a lot of good teams, the padres are going to be fortunate to make a wildcard. Boy was I wrong about the no west! More crow for me!

    Happy 4th again!

In the prologue of the excellent movie “Midway”, the Intel Capt asked the Admiral, “Admiral, Were we better than the Japs, or just lucky?”. Relating it to last night’s incredible win, the answer would be both. The flubbed DP grounder by Cronninworth was luck and cashing in on it with Teo’s Granny was be because this team is better than an other team in baseball.

You can’t get better than that. Game finished at 12:30 here in the East Coast on the 4th of July. What a great 250th birthday gift for Dodger fans.

      • Bear6d agoReply

Ohtani said that the biceps pain has been something he has dealt with before. He felt it in his second at bat. Padres are not even the second-best team in the division. Losing that game cost them 2 games in the standings. LA now leads them by 14. Even if LA loses the nest two, SD would leave in exactly the same spot they came in with. LA is 14 games in front of both SD and Az. Last 10: LA 8-2, SD 3-7 and on a 7-game losing streak, Az 4-6. The Rockies, who are 22 back and arrive in LA on Monday, have won 3 in a row.

Horah! back at ya . 28 years Navy Chief. Retired 1991.

Question: Why isn’t Alfonzo backing up Rushing? He’s hitting.308/800+OPS in OKC, Chuckie is hitting.095 and doesn’t have a positive OPS. Lol

Dad was a Navy vet, at Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Nevada. Grandpa served in the Navy in WWI. My son was in the Navy for 4 years. Sorry, I am a land lubber! One of my best friends, Art Valde, spent 32 years in the Navy. Made it to Lt. Commander as a Mustang officer. Because of a RIF, he retired as a CW-4.

“The Padres are placing starter Randy Vásquez on the 15-day injured list and catcher Freddy Fermin on the 10-day IL, reports Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune. Vásquez has a bruised right ankle, while Fermin has a head bruise. San Diego will reinstate Luis Campusano from the injured list and recall reliever Alek Jacob from Triple-A El Paso to fill the active roster spots”.

Jeff, will the Dodgers add Jackson Ferris to the 40 man roster before the end of the season so he can be activated and give some of the present starters a breather? Unless River Ryan comes off the IL,there is really no one else to help out.

I am going to need to see more from Ferris. One good game is not enough. What I am encouraged about is that after a slow start in 2025, Ferris had a very good summer. A lot will depend on how well Snell and Glasnow come back. There is also the potential to add a starter at the deadline. But, yes, Ferris will be an option, as was Ryan 2 years ago, and Sheehan the year before that.

2026 MLB Draft Preview – CWS Is On the Clock

Draft day is near (Saturday). Will the Dodgers get a difference maker at pick #40? Maybe, maybe not. Dalton Rushing is a difference maker and he was picked as the LAD #1 at #40. LHSP Zach Root (#40) looks like a strong potential difference maker as does Charles Davalan (#41). But their strategy is so muddled because of their lack of a bonus pool. It is not that there will…

Evolution of the Lead-off Hitter

The image of a prototypical lead-off hitter has changed dramatically over the last several years. When I first started watching baseball in the 50’s, most lead of hitters were players with high OBP’s and some speed. Of course, players in the 50’s were evaluated a lot differently than players are today. Pee Wee Reese was actually hit second more than he led off. As a leadoff man, Pee Wee hit…

Alex Freeland Has More Work to do!

I generally don’t have a “favorite” player… kind of like I don’t have a favorite kid… or grandkid. However, I am unashamed to say that Alex Freeland is now my favorite player, simply because of what he has had to overcome to get where he is. I admire his parents for what they did for him, and I admire his indomitable spirit. However, the time has come for Alex to…
