FASTEST RISER: Alex Freeland is climbing up the list very rapidly. Could he be ready in 2025? I would not bet against it. Ok, he’s not going to be a superstar, but could he be the SS the Dodgers need?
MOST LIKELY TO BE TRADED: Josue DePaula is a man without a position. In other words, he’s a DH. He’s Delwyn Young bad. I would look to trade him. The Dodgers have a DH.
Last week, I said that Tyler Glasnow looked tired and was sarcastically questioned as to whether that was just my imagination or if it were true. Yes, it is true. It is possible that his back was tight as well. At least, it’s not his arm. The Dodgers made a good move to put him on the IL.
Bobby Miller is a hot mess because he cannot find his release point. Fans will panic, but Friedman won’t—thank God! There’s a fine line between success and failure—and it’s in his head! You start trying to guide the ball, and then you tighten up, and it doesn’t go where you want. Young pitchers sometimes take several starts to work it out. When Gerritt Cole came back, he had that problem, but he was able to work it out after one game. I do not normally think it’s good to send a guy like Bobby Miller down to AAA, but maybe he should go to AAA and work it out. I am sure Prior is considering it.
Garrett Crochet: I was listening to Mad Dog and Alana Rizzo yesterday talking about Garrett Crochet. Mad Dog was all in on Crochet, while Alana believed he’s not going to be helpful as a starter since he will likely have close to 120 IP by the deadline, nearly twice as much as he has in his entire career. She thinks he will have to spend a lot of time on the IL or in the bullpen. To get Garrett, it might take both Wrobleski and Ferris… and DePaula.
GOOD NEWS: Kershaw, Kelly, Yamamoto, Buehler, and Glasnow should be back this month or early August. Knack, Stone, Wrobleski, Yarbrough, and an opener can hold down the fort until then. It is my opinion that Crochet will require too much prospect collateral. The juice is not worth the squeeze. Ferris and Wrobleski could be a Crochet.
BATTING AVERAGES: The overall batting average for the 30 teams is .240. If it remains that way, it will be the lowest since the league batted .237 in 1968, the so-called year of the pitcher, when the leaguewide ERA was 2.98. Sportico has a piece written at the end of May this year talking bout this very issue. Analytics on positioning fielders and batter tendencies have squeezed players like Cavan Biggio, Austin Barnes, Kike Hernandez and Chris Taylor. These were guys who were maybe better than league average in some respects, but advanced metrics of fastball speed and spin rate have exposed them. Some may be able to recover, and some won’t. All I know is that it takes more time to fix it… if it can be fixed. I think the Biggio experiment is nearing its end… even with his HR yesterday. We all know that AF loves a good comeback story, but this one is failing. Here’s a quote from the Article:

We played tough tonight. We did not quit.
But man this team is just fundamentally BAD

All the little things Dodger Baseball was known for I just don’t see it anymore
All of it from bunting to defense (outfield tonight) to base running and all the little things in between
Example:
I watch Vargas running to first base. Does he slow up a little (2-3 ft) before he hits the bag. Yes.
But I watch it in slow motion and he starts to stand up strait a little and looks down at his feet and the bag.
He is not running threw the bag,
His footwork as he is getting close to the bag is off and he is concerned he is going to land on the bag awkwardly and injure his ankle or knee.
That can absolutely happen if you don’t know how to constantly have your lead foot hit the front 1/3rd of that bag each and every time.
Watch how Othani comes down the line through the bag.
That is stuff you learn in High School.
But you have to practice and repeat.
Ok enough on that.
Doesn’t look like we will get a chance to see River Ryan this weekend.
Maybe after the All-Star break depending on who will be available to pitch to start the 2nd half of the season.
Will see if they make any adjustments to the 40 man roster..
Certainly would like to see what the kid can do.

Dodgers lost 4-3, but it was not what you would call a bad loss. Stone pitched ok. Other than the homer Schwarber hit, he was victimized by some shaky defense in the outfield, and infield, and some soft hit balls that fell in. On the offensive side, they never really got it going against Sanchez. They scratched out two runs, only to give up the lead shortly thereafter. They tried to comeback in the 8th, with Pages doubling and Rojas knocking him in only to be called out trying to stretch his hit to a double. Ohtani got two hits and drove in a run. Freddie missed a chance when he grounded out. Pages, Hernandez and Freeman left runners in scoring position. They were 4-11 with RISP. But a lack of clutch hitting plagued them again. The Padres lost, so they are still 7.5 games in front of them. Arizona won and the Giants lost. D-Backs are 9 back, only 1.5 behind the Padres. SD and the Dodgers are 4-6 in their last 10 games. SD is on a 4-game losing streak, and the Dodgers 3. Arizona is 6-4 over that time, Colo and SF 5-5. Dodgers have 69 games left. to win 100 they would have to go 45-24. A lot of teams are still in the Wild Card hunt. One advantage the Dodgers have over San Diego is that the Padres have played 3 more games than the Dodgers and trail them by 9 games in the lost column.
