FASTEST RISER: Alex Freeland is climbing up the list very rapidly. Could he be ready in 2025? I would not bet against it. Ok, he’s not going to be a superstar, but could he be the SS the Dodgers need?

MOST LIKELY TO BE TRADED: Josue DePaula is a man without a position. In other words, he’s a DH. He’s Delwyn Young bad. I would look to trade him. The Dodgers have a DH.

Last week, I said that Tyler Glasnow looked tired and was sarcastically questioned as to whether that was just my imagination or if it were true. Yes, it is true. It is possible that his back was tight as well. At least, it’s not his arm. The Dodgers made a good move to put him on the IL.

Bobby Miller is a hot mess because he cannot find his release point. Fans will panic, but Friedman won’t—thank God! There’s a fine line between success and failure—and it’s in his head! You start trying to guide the ball, and then you tighten up, and it doesn’t go where you want. Young pitchers sometimes take several starts to work it out. When Gerritt Cole came back, he had that problem, but he was able to work it out after one game. I do not normally think it’s good to send a guy like Bobby Miller down to AAA, but maybe he should go to AAA and work it out. I am sure Prior is considering it.

Garrett Crochet: I was listening to Mad Dog and Alana Rizzo yesterday talking about Garrett Crochet. Mad Dog was all in on Crochet, while Alana believed he’s not going to be helpful as a starter since he will likely have close to 120 IP by the deadline, nearly twice as much as he has in his entire career. She thinks he will have to spend a lot of time on the IL or in the bullpen. To get Garrett, it might take both Wrobleski and Ferris… and DePaula.

GOOD NEWS: Kershaw, Kelly, Yamamoto, Buehler, and Glasnow should be back this month or early August. Knack, Stone, Wrobleski, Yarbrough, and an opener can hold down the fort until then. It is my opinion that Crochet will require too much prospect collateral. The juice is not worth the squeeze. Ferris and Wrobleski could be a Crochet.

BATTING AVERAGES: The overall batting average for the 30 teams is .240. If it remains that way, it will be the lowest since the league batted .237 in 1968, the so-called year of the pitcher, when the leaguewide ERA was 2.98. Sportico has a piece written at the end of May this year talking bout this very issue. Analytics on positioning fielders and batter tendencies have squeezed players like Cavan Biggio, Austin Barnes, Kike Hernandez and Chris Taylor. These were guys who were maybe better than league average in some respects, but advanced metrics of fastball speed and spin rate have exposed them. Some may be able to recover, and some won’t. All I know is that it takes more time to fix it… if it can be fixed. I think the Biggio experiment is nearing its end… even with his HR yesterday. We all know that AF loves a good comeback story, but this one is failing. Here’s a quote from the Article:

Fifteen of the 30 MLB teams are hitting below the league’s .240 average, including the Chicago White Sox at the bottom of the league at a miserable .214. The Cincinnati Reds are a few ticks above them at .218.”

Dodgers lost 4-3, but it was not what you would call a bad loss. Stone pitched ok. Other than the homer Schwarber hit, he was victimized by some shaky defense in the outfield, and infield, and some soft hit balls that fell in. On the offensive side, they never really got it going against Sanchez. They scratched out two runs, only to give up the lead shortly thereafter. They tried to comeback in the 8th, with Pages doubling and Rojas knocking him in only to be called out trying to stretch his hit to a double. Ohtani got two hits and drove in a run. Freddie missed a chance when he grounded out. Pages, Hernandez and Freeman left runners in scoring position. They were 4-11 with RISP. But a lack of clutch hitting plagued them again. The Padres lost, so they are still 7.5 games in front of them. Arizona won and the Giants lost. D-Backs are 9 back, only 1.5 behind the Padres. SD and the Dodgers are 4-6 in their last 10 games. SD is on a 4-game losing streak, and the Dodgers 3. Arizona is 6-4 over that time, Colo and SF 5-5. Dodgers have 69 games left. to win 100 they would have to go 45-24. A lot of teams are still in the Wild Card hunt. One advantage the Dodgers have over San Diego is that the Padres have played 3 more games than the Dodgers and trail them by 9 games in the lost column.

We played tough tonight. We did not quit.

But man this team is just fundamentally BAD

But kudos to great -great defensive play all night long by Kike and Taylor, Man I wish they could hit better,

All the little things Dodger Baseball was known for I just don’t see it anymore

All of it from bunting to defense (outfield tonight) to base running and all the little things in between

    Example:

I watch Vargas running to first base. Does he slow up a little (2-3 ft) before he hits the bag. Yes.

But I watch it in slow motion and he starts to stand up strait a little and looks down at his feet and the bag.

He is not running threw the bag,

His footwork as he is getting close to the bag is off and he is concerned he is going to land on the bag awkwardly and injure his ankle or knee.

That can absolutely happen if you don’t know how to constantly have your lead foot hit the front 1/3rd of that bag each and every time.

Watch how Othani comes down the line through the bag.

That is stuff you learn in High School.

But you have to practice and repeat.

    Ok enough on that.

Doesn’t look like we will get a chance to see River Ryan this weekend.

Maybe after the All-Star break depending on who will be available to pitch to start the 2nd half of the season.

Will see if they make any adjustments to the 40 man roster..

Certainly would like to see what the kid can do.

    Tonight’s pitching line @ AAA

    Ryan:

    5.0 IP

    5 hits

    2 ER

    2 BB

    6 K

    67 pitches

    2.76 ERA

    0.85 WHIP

And then there’s good old Joe Kelly

    Tonight’s pitching line @ AAA

    IP – 0.1

    Hits- 4

    Runs-4

    BB- 3

    K-1

    25 pitches

    ERA -108

This was his 3rd rehab game.

1st at OKC. Pitched 2 scoreless innings at Rancho

Love his attitude, hate his reliability and consistency.

    Got to give Joe credit.

Has pitch maybe 13 innings so far this year.

Gets 9 million TY and a brand new car.

    Go Dodgers!!

  3. BradleyJuly 11, 2024

Nick Ahmad was DFA from the Giants yesterday he’s a shortstop and at least he is better then those six guys the black hole gang we now call them.

  4. CassidyJuly 11, 2024

I guess it must be inflation but $232 mil just doesn’t get you what it used!

  5. dodgerdadJuly 11, 2024

a sacrifice bunt, with a runner on second and nobody out? down 2 runs? sorry doc, that doesn’t make sense. the tying run, yes! bad managing, bad fundamentals James!

  6. dodgerdadJuly 11, 2024

this game is not on Gavin Stone!

  7. DodgerfanJuly 11, 2024

This Dodger team is pathetic against competition such as Philadelphia Phillies Major changes are needed after the all start game

  8. dodgerdadJuly 10, 2024

    it’s sad

  9. CassidyJuly 10, 2024

Dodger “black hole gang” Lux, Barnes, Biggio, Outman, Kiké, Taylor. All sub .600 OPS! Why can’t we score consistently?

  10. NH DodgerJuly 10, 2024

    1. Tend to agree with Alana Rizzo on Crochet. TJ surgery two years ago, converted to starting at his request this year, already exceeded his innings pitched in any season. We know the history of recovery from second TJ. White Sox probably asking for the moon which is their prerogative but Dodgers also probably factored some of the above in their offer.

    2. No way Dodgers are going to trade for two outfielders, a starting infielder and two starters.

    3. Mark, nice information in post today. Thanks for prospect updates. The Sportico article was interesting. Along those lines, scanning random box scores for the bottom three in ML line ups confirms that a lot of teams have weak bats at end of line up. Not saying that we should be satisfied with Taylor, Hernandez, Lux, Biggio and Barnes but a bottom three of Pages, Vargas, and Rojas with Muncy and Betts back may well be good enough.

  11. JohnJuly 10, 2024

The last 30 days or so Taylor has been a decent MLB player. Vargas is a decent to good hitter. Have faith! Bauer has been proven innocent of any crimes. He can certainly be a knucklehead sometimes but he shouldn’t be condemned for being a knucklehead and if he is a lot more of us would be banned from our professions. If the Dodger faithful and/or can see through this and give Bauer a chance that’s on us. I was all for his banishment if the allegations were true. In a sense he’s still in prison and committed no crime. Free Bauer, we need to start a movement.

Okay I came up with this trade with the Nationals. Dodgers trade James Putman Miguel Vargas Lux cartaya and and lets pick a pitcher River Ryan and a minorleage infielder to the Nationals for Lane Thomaa Jessie Winker CJ Abram and ther number one or number two pitcher the dodgers get bettee hitters a star shortstop for the next several years and Rojas moves over to second base until Betts get back or he plays third base would yiu do that I would improves the outfield and dodgers get better hitters then they have now. I don’t think that’s a bad trade for either club and can they include there manager Dave martiniz and Dave Robert’s goes to the Nationals . Go Dodgers do something big like that boys.

  14. dodgerdadJuly 10, 2024

i almost laughed when i saw that lineup! i think it was dodgerram who posted earlier, they do just enough every once in a while to hang on! that bottom 4 is pretty much the weakest bottom 4 in dodger history! lol. But they probably get 4 hits combined tonight and all is well in dodger land! I think Miller is mentally injured as well as physically injured right now. That boy has too much talent to be that bad! He’ll be back. ……. It’s a shame will has to sit, but ohtani has to DH. with that heat last night, it’s understandable. Maybe Doc should have gotten will out after it was 8-0 . ….. Phillies were impressive last night. But by no means are they invincible. hopefully by post season we have healthy pitchers. Announcers said the phillies had been running the same starting 5 out there for a while. So you never know, the injury bug could hit them hard too. ………. Not opposed to Bauer coming back, just wondering how the players feel about him. I would be way more open to Bauer than any of the aaaaastro cheaters! …. Short sample , but outman looks pretty much the same as he did before he was sent down……… Did i hear the dodgers made another offer to the white sox? interesting, wonder how many players would be involved?! maybe a pitcher and a SS/ 3rd baseman?

I’m with you a 1000% MATT. I would LOVE to see Trevor Bauer back in Dodger Blue again.

  19. BradleyJuly 10, 2024

Okay I think we need to do major trades because right now Philly looks really good after that beatdown last nite. The need two outfielders that can hit a infielder that can hit and field and pitching starters when supposedly we had like 15 pitchers just waiting to pitch phillie just showed us up.. Giants and Brewers games all tough games yes Betts is out and Muncy so what we juts slide by and think those guys are going to showup and then bam were good. But I would trade about six players and people we have in minors becwu they need about 5 new players to compete with Phillie and probable the Brewers in the playoffs and Padres they always go and get people at trade dealine.

  20. NJ DodgerJuly 10, 2024

Currently on the MLB network the White Sox’a are facing the Twins.

Fedde is pitching and Robert’s, Dejong and Pham are in the lineup.

  21. Mark TimmonsJuly 10, 2024

Ted Raymond raised a good question about the Dodgers pitching training and injuries. Here are two things that are true and maybe mutually exclusive:

    1. The Dodgers are the “Tip of the Spear” in pitching analytics, spin rate, and fastball velocity, and in fact employ Rob Hill (from Driveline Baseball); and

    2. The Dodgers also have the most pitching injuries, which is why they are hoarding arms.

    I think #1 has led to #2.

The question is: Can they fix that or is that just what you get when you have that Velo and Spin Rate?

  22. MattJuly 10, 2024

    Trevor Bauer anyone????

  23. Old Bear 48July 10, 2024

No team can overcome too many injuries. I have seen teams that were really good messed up because of just one. I think at this point the Dodgers are just trying to hold serve until the deadline and some of the walking wounded return. I think they will trade for a starting pitcher because it is a need. Freidman does that a lot. But he is also going to have to do something about his reserve players. Biggio hit a homer yesterday, and that might have bought him some time, until the All-Star break is over maybe. They won’t do anything until after that. They sure are not going to give any of the guys at AAA a shot. Outman was over-matched yesterday.

  24. JohnJuly 10, 2024

People we need to relax. Games like that happen especially in mid season. A team gets a big hit or whatever happens and the baseball becomes as big as a ballon. On the other hand things turn bad and the ball becomes a marble. More than likely the Dodgers are going to have a couple more of these maybe this month. Look at the big picture, SD, Arizona both lost the Dodgers are up 9 in the loss column. The worst thing we could do is hit the panic button and start making foolish decisions based on emotion versus reasoning. Whatever they decide for Miller will be based on professional decisions of rather he would better recover by going to OKC or running out there again in five days and see if this is a trend or one those days.

On another note I’d love to see River Ryan get a shot Thursday. They would have to clear a spot on the 40 man and 26 man roster. If the Dodgers need help on those decisions they can contact me and I’ll give a suggestion.

  25. tedraymond2.0July 10, 2024

The complete destruction of the Dodger starting staff continues. I really have to question the Dodgers’ conditioning practices. What kind of routine is used by the training staff with pitchers in between starts? I’m sure it’s different with each pitcher. With all the advanced information, techniques, machines, etc why do pitchers get injured so easily? Maybe, stop trying to throw the pitch through a wall and work on location. Obviously, maximum torque on almost every pitch is not good for long term health.

Glasgow is 6’8″, 225 and only 30 years old and he now has back issues (??? with the Dodgers you never know) after only 109 innings. This is after several years of arm issues. Last year he threw 120 innings which was a career high. So, in approximately seven seasons he has thrown just over 600 innings. His arm and body certainly hasn’t been overused. Possibly, misused?

Yamamoto has an unusual conditioning routine that has kept his arm and body healthy. So, $325M+ and 14 starts later he has shoulder issues and will out for who knows how long. That is not a good start for a pitcher in the beginning a 10 year contract.

Bobby Miller has one excellent outing to start the season and then it’s been a shit show and injuries since.

Walker Buehler comes back after almost two years pretty much unprepared to pitch and now is on the IL.

The currently have 12 pitchers on the IL with eight of them on the 60 day IL.

Mark Prior is considered a excellent pitching coach. It appears the Dodger pitching coaches throughout the system are doing a good job. The prospects that are called up are prepared to pitch in the majors in most cases. But, I question the medical and training staff. They are not doing what it takes to help keep these pitchers healthy and available. I would think something needs to be done to improve this situation. Many might say “well, this a baseball problem”. The Dodgers have been leaders in using analytics and development of prospects. But, what good is it when the finished product is constantly breaking down? It seems it’s pitch a few games and then go on the IL. These pitcher throw more innings in little league, high school, and college than they do as a professional. And, yet, they still have arm and body injuries. If I hear the phrase “keep them fresh for the playoffs” again……

It’s exciting when a prospect comes up and does well. Maybe, a new favorite pitcher. I look at all the IL occupants and talent unavailable and can only hope some will return this season. Then a youngster comes up and pitches well. It’s exciting and hopeful. After a couple of successful outings I think is how long before he goes on the IL?

I know that’s a negative way to look at things, but after a while of constant IL injuries that’s what goes through my mind. Frustrating for sure.

    Carry on.

  26. NJ DodgerJuly 10, 2024

    Miller, should go down today.

They have no pitcher listed for Thurs, start .

Maybe (hate to say it) a bullpen if anyone is left) or bringing someone up. Who ?!

I doubt they would bring him back Sunday on 4 days rest.

He won’t be needed to start another game until after the AllStar break and as the 5th starter could be called up on Tuesday July 23rd..

He could effectively get a 2 week reset both mentally and physically. It also allows for another arm in the bullpen.

    If that doesn’t help ??

    On a side note

    Mark,

That was actually a very well presented infomercial..

    Don’t quit your day job.

And what the hell did you do with Colonel Sanders.!!

    Go Dodgers!!

  27. MushersPopJuly 10, 2024

After last nights game Miller’s ERA is 8.07.

Maybe he’s hurt. Maybe he’s a head case. Maybe he just needs sometime to work on release point. Maybe it’s a combination of things. It was interesting that after the GS, Hershiser thought he started to hit his spots more. His rationale being he didn’t have to worry as much about being perfect. If so, then he needs to work on the mental part of the game.

If you look at Stone and Miller, it’s Miller who is the higher prospect. Yet Stone has shown far more composure during his brief time with the club.

  28. Brian PerkinsJuly 10, 2024

I disagree about DePaula. I don’t think he has done anything to eliminate himself as a future OF.

I said Miller was a “head case” meaning his problems were mental and not physical and was called in essence a “crackhead” by you yesterday. I also suggested he should be sent down to work out his problems and you called me out and a few others for being short sighted. Today you suggest he just might be sent down to work it out.

Today’s post you say Miller’s problem is mental. MT you’re a tough nut to figure out. If a poster comments something that doesn’t fit your thought process at that time they’re labeled a moron, but the next morning it becomes your “hot take.”

Don’t take it personal, love the blog and don’t ever close it up. I read everyday and post often, but not as much as others.

You don’t always have to be right or prove your superior analytical skills. You’ve had many emotional “takes” including one a couple of years when you were calling for Doc to be fired.

Hakuna matata! Worry free atmosphere. All good!

  31. DanoJuly 10, 2024

Have a little cheese with that whine. So much negativity. You don’t have to think to trash a good take. But you do have to think to make one. I know the former is easier. It’s July, enjoy baseball. Tell us who you want the Dodgers to get. It’s trade deadline time! Philly? Who cares if they’re great. Talk to me in Oct. Mark is right again. Same old song. Reading between the lines, I think Roger was referring to this blog. Lol. What a great time to be a Dodger fan. Negative comments welcome.

Milller has a drop in velo and he has zero command. Yes, he says he is not hurt but wasn´t that what Gonsolin said too ? Until he had to have surgery.

you say good news that Kershaw, Buehler, Yamamoto and Glasnow will be back soon. I say all of them are question marks to come back. One bigger (Yamamoto) , one smaller (Glasnow) concerns. No one knows if Buehler will get back his stuff and how Clayton comes back. We are seeing that coming back and coming back sound are two different animals when watching Miller.

IMHO the Dodgers will need two starters at the deadline. One top of the rotation guy , one inning eater.

Plus at least one solid bat and pray that both Mookie and MM come back in time and ready to roll.

    Go Dodgers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
