May 1, 1920. In the city of Boston, the police were uneasy in the murky morning mist. Between intermittent showers, they stood with shoulders hunched against the chilly air as they trudged out in extra details, alert to the morning headlines, “Guard against Bolshevik uprisings here. As it turned out, the only battle that day took place at the local ball field as the Bostons, and the Brooklyns battled for 26 innings and ended up tied. It still stands as the longest game in major league history.
On the mound, that day for Uncle Robbie’s Brooklyn team was Leon Cadore. The 28-year-old Cadore was in his 4th full season in the big leagues. He would post a 15-14 mark that year, helping Brooklyn win the NL pennant. His mound opponent was Joe Oeschger. Always described as jovial, Oeschger was in the beginning of what for him, was a resurgent season. He had finished 4-4 in 1919, playing for three teams, the Phils, Giants, and then Boston. He and Cadore had met 10 days earlier, and Cadore outlasted him, 1-0 in 11 innings. Brooklyn was led by their star outfielder, Zack Wheat. Manager George Stalling’s team was not nearly that talented. They would finish in 7th place in the NL that year with a 60-92-1 record.
It was drizzling when the umpire, Bill McCormick, yelled, “Play ball”. Ivy Olsen, the Robins leadoff hitter, stepped into the box. But the rain stopped abruptly after the first inning, and the crowd settled in to watch the game. Three more scoreless innings would pass. In the fifth inning, Brooklyn’s catcher, Ernie Krueger, worked a walk. Cadore then bounced one back to Oeschger, but he had the ball pop out of his hand, and his only play was to first. Krueger then scored when Olsen singled over Rabbit Maranville’s head.
In the sixth, Boston’s right fielder, Wally Cruise, tripled off of the fence in right-center field. Holke then hit a ball over third base that looked like a hit, but Wheat came flying in and made a shoestring catch and almost doubled Cruise off at third. But then Tony Boeckel lined a single to center, scoring Cruise. The score was tied 1-1.
It was cold and damp, and there was the wind blowing in from the Charles River just beyond center field. It cut down balls that could have been hits, into harmless outs. The crowd huddled together in the cold as the double string of zeros continued to grow. Both of the pitchers were very careful since they knew one mistake could cost them the win.
The harder the players tried to get hits, the easier it was for the pitchers to get them out. In the ninth, however, Boston loaded the bases with two outs. Maranville was on third. Charley Pick hit a hard grounder that Olsen pounced on; he tried to tag Ray Powell but missed, then he threw to first just in time to get Pick. Meanwhile, Maranville crossed the plate, but umpire Eugene Hart ruled that Powell had run out of the baseline, so the run was invalid.
The zeros kept piling up until in the 17th inning, when a New York Times reporter noticed that the zeros were extending beyond the scoreboard. Brooklyn finally got to Oeschger in the 17th and had the bases loaded with one out. Wheat was on third. Elliott hit a grounder back to the pitcher, who threw to C Hank Gowdy for the force. Gowdy’s throw to first went wild, and Holke barely knocked it down. Ed Konetchy tried to score from second. Holke threw to Gowdy, who threw himself across the plate, meeting Konetchy’s spikes with his bare hand.
The zeros kept piling up. When they hit the 23rd inning, they broke the NL record. When they hit 25, they broke the Major League record. When the 26th inning was done, Umpire Bill McCormick surveyed the darkening skies. Ivy Olsen, guessing his intent, ran up to him and spoke, ” Wait one more inning! I want to tell my grandchildren I played the equivalent of three nine-inning games in one day.” “Not without a miner’s lamp.” snapped McCormick. He raised his hands, calling the game because of darkness.
The line score read Brooklyn 1-9-2 Boston 1-15-2. Only two Brooklyn hitters had more than one hit, Wheat, and 3B, Jimmie Johnston. They had no extra-base hits. Boston had a couple of doubles and a triple. The entire game took 3 hours and 50 minutes and was played before 4500 intrepid fans. The Robins left Boston the next day on a train. They then lost a 13-inning game to the Phillies that afternoon. Monday, they were back in Boston, where they lost in 19 innings. In 58 hours, they lost two and had a tie. The game would be finished later in the season, with the Braves getting the win. But Brooklyn went to the World Series, so that had to be some consolation. Oeschger would continue his resurgence the next season, winning 20 games. But he never won in double figures after 1921. He finished his career with Brooklyn in 1925, going 1-2 for a career mark of 82-116. Leon Cadore pitched until 1924, finishing his career with the Giants. He won 13 in 1922 but also never reached double figures again. He finished with a career 68-72 record.
26 innings of baseball. The longest MLB game ever in terms of innings played. There have been games time-wise in the modern era that are much longer. In 1974, the Cardinals and Mets played 25 innings, with the Cards getting the win. In 1984, the White Sox and Brewers also played 25, with the Sox prevailing. That game took 8 hours and 6 minutes. The Cards-Mets tiff took seven hours 23 minutes. The longest 9-inning game timewise was a Yankee win at Boston in 2006, which took four hours 45 minutes. NL record is four hours 30 minutes by the D-Backs and Rockies in 2016 and the Phils and Pirates in 2018.
Both the Brooklyn Dodgers and the L.A. version have 22-inning wins. Brooklyn beat the Pirates 6-5 in Brooklyn in 1917, and LA beat Montreal 1-0 in Montreal in 1989.

Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports that the Padres are paying a whopping $44MM to the Red Sox, reducing Boston’s commitment to Hosmer to the league minimum in addition to the prospects to the Nationals for Soto.

BTW, a friend’s son is one of those nerdy analysts who works in the Blue Jays front office. He studied this stuff at the University of Oregon, and worked for the Marlins before the Jays lured him away.
Anyway, she is thrilled that White is now a Blue Jay- She says that Frasso is really a good prospect, but there’s little reason to get excited about Brito.

Frasso, 23, has a 0.74 ERA in 10 starts this year between Low-A Dunedin and High-A Vancouver, with 57 strikeouts against 10 walks in 36⅔ innings. The right-hander played college ball at Loyola Marymount, and was drafted by Toronto in the fourth round in 2020.
Brito, who just turned 20 last month, was signed this June out of Bani in the Dominican Republic. In 12 games and 29 innings in the Dominican Summer League for Toronto, Brito had a 1.86 ERA and 32 strikeouts against just one walk.
Toronto also got SS Alex De Jesus. The farm has a lot of depth in the SS/UT area, and the Dodgers just drafted a bunch more.
As much as I hate the Pads, I really would like to see them be a better team, because it’s even MORE SATISFYING to crush them.
I have had time to sit back and digest what went down today. I also have calmed down a lot from the way I felt earlier. For those fans who have seen AF send multiple prospects to other teams at the deadline the last few years, this season’s deadline was obviously a disappointment. Joey Gallo was the only MLB ready player that the Dodgers acquired, and they sent 3 players who were on the 40-man roster elsewhere. This tells me the Freidman believes in the players he has and the players on the IL who will soon be returning to action. There are some pretty good pitchers on that list. JT will probably be joining them tomorrow when Gallo arrives since his side is still bothering him. Vargas gets promoted so they can see what he can bring to the dance. I am not a huge Gallo fan. But he is a very good defensive outfielder and makes the defense out in left that much better. My main dislike for him is because he strikes out at almost a 40% clip. That is way too many useless outs for me. I am not the one making the personnel decisions though. The Padres definitely went all in to win now. They also just extended Musgrove for 5 more years. But, their starting pitching is not all that great. Clevinger has not been the pitcher he was in Cleveland. The last time LA faced Snell, they beat up on him. Darvish has flashes, but he also can be beaten. They traded their best rookie pitcher in Gore. Now they did get Hader, and he is lights out when he is right. Over the last few weeks though, his ERA is over 7. Pads have 12 games left with the Dodgers. 6 of the 12 are in LA. 9 of the 12 are also in September. They have 57 games left after the game they played today. They won so right now they are 11.5 games back of LA. Also, while the Dodgers finish with 6 at home against Colorado, they have to play the White Sox and Giants at home. They have about a 25% chance of catching LA to win the division. Doubt that will happen, which means they will have to go the wild card route to even get to the Dodgers who right now would have a bye in the wild card round. If they get through that, and their opponents would be either the Mets or Braves most likely, then they would possibly meet up with the Dodgers in the playoffs. So now it is just a race to the finish. Pads have never had the better team on paper. They might have that now but a lot depends on how Soto performs in his new uni, Tatis coming back and being Tatis, which at this point is not a given. The healthier the Dodgers get, the better they are. I also have to believe that one of the factors in not going whole hog is the chemistry that exists in this clubhouse. These guys really believe they are the best.

Andrew Friedman cited the coming 40-man roster crush (May, Duffy, Buehler, Kahnle, Treinen, Gonzalez) as a reason for trading Mitch White. He went on to say the Dodgers have “a lot of pitchers” who could come up this season or next year.
Dodgers are going to show the Padres why investing in your system is how you win. Vargas will rake. His father is one of the most famous e baseball players who ever played in Cuba. He’s a real Dodger. Wait till you all see his smile when he hits his first one out. He’s was born to play in LA.
Cartaya will be next year. Intangibles are a thing. I might be wrong. Don’t think I am.
Hold me accountable. By the playoffs in 2023, people will be talking about the charismatic young stars on the Dodgers who are kicking ass and taking names. Not the Padres.

DODGERS SELECT MIGUEL VARGAS
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers selected the contract of infielder/outfielder Miguel Vargas from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Vargas, 22, hit .291 with 24 doubles, 15 homers and 72 RBI in 94 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City. He represented the Dodgers in the 2022 Futures Game after hitting .292/.379/.498 with 18 doubles, 13 home runs and 59 RBI across 364 plate appearances. The Cuban native has been with the Dodgers five minor league seasons, and he has hit a combined .310 (480-for-1548) with 47 homers and 255 RBI in 391 career minor league games. The Dodgers’ Branch Rickey Minor League Player of the Year in 2021, slashed .319/.380/.526 with 23 homers and 76 RBI in 120 games between High-A Great Lakes and Double-A Tulsa in 2021. He was originally signed by the Dodgers as an international free agent on September 7, 2017.
And though our top prospects are solid, do not see a perennial all star or superstar in the bunch. I am not blown away by even Cartaya as I don’t see him being able to stay a catcher.
Soto and Bell would have allowed us to rival the 1927 Yankees and chase the all time wins record of 116!

Some bizarre stuff here.
Hard to imagine that the old “change of scenery” will quickly cure Gallo. One analyst said he will likely platoon with Trayce Thompson in left…. but doesn’t Trayce have reverse splits? Gallo has hit 11 of his 12 HRs against righties, but his BA this year is still under .200. I presume his arrival prompted Lamb getting dealt to Mariners. Gallo has a better OF glove than Lamb, but I don’t really see an upgrade here.
Dodgers may live to regret trading White, but with various pitchers coming back he probably didn’t figure into plans this year. The two young prospects they get seem promising–probably better than Beeter.
When Chris Taylor and Edwin Rios are activated, it seems likely that Outman will head back to OKC.
Sure, it’s a small sample size, but there is precedent for prospects coming up and staying hot, like Seager did.
Instead we get to hope that Gallo makes a comeback.

Dodgers are still better. But I feel for Angel fans. When the Angels should be trading Ohtani for an entire minor league system they instead traded their very talented 24 YO outfielder with years of team control for a good AA catcher. After they just drafted a catcher in the 1st round who will likely be in AA next year. I’m so glad I’m not an Angel fan. AF plays chess. Arte Moreno plays shoots and ladders.

No real upgrades to the BP concerns me and my only takeaway is the Dodger braintrust and medical team must be thoroughly and absolutely convinced Treinen, May, Duffy, Kahnle, V-Gone and Graterol are all or in part returning soon and will make a strong roster even better. I only care that we win the WS, I could care less about winning the trade deadline, but at the same time I am underwhelmed with the acquisition of just Martin and Gallo.

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired minor league pitchers Nick Frasso and Moises Brito from Toronto in exchange for right-handed pitcher Mitch White and minor league infielder Alex De Jesus.
Frasso, 23, was 0-0 with 0.74 ERA (3 ER/36.2 IP) and 57 strikeouts in 10 games between Single-A Dunedin and High-A Vancouver. He began the season with Dunedin, appearing in seven games, striking out 42 in 25.2 innings and allowing two runs. Brito, 20, is 2-4 with a 1.86 ERA (6 ER/29.0 IP) and 32 strikeouts in 12 games (two starts) for the Dominican Summer League Blue Jays. The left-handed pitcher is in his first season with the Blue Jays organization after signing as an international free agent on June 2, 2022.
White, 27, made 15 appearances (10 starts) for the Dodgers, going 1-2 with a 3.70 ERA (23 ER/56.0 IP) and 47 strikeouts for the Dodgers this season. In three years with the Dodgers, he is a combined 3-5 with a 3.58 ERA (42 ER/105.2 IP) and 98 strikeouts in 38 games. He was originally selected in the second round of the 2016 First Year Player Draft out of Santa Clara University.
De Jesus, 20, was batting .272 with 11 homers and 48 RBI combined between Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and High-A Great Lakes. He clubbed seven homers and recorded 22 RBI with Rancho before being promoted on May 31, 2022. In 50 games with Great Lakes, he was batting .282 with four homers and 26 RBI. He has been with the Dodgers four seasons, batting a combined .273 (247-for-906) with 26 homers and 155 RBI. He was signed as an international free agent by the Dodgers out of Santo Domino, Dominican Republic on July 3, 2018.
Now there are spots that could be filled internally on the major league roster. How about bringing up Stone or Vargas?

Well, there’s still time to make a deal, but I really don’t like Joey Gallo and I thought that Lamb was doing more than fine. Replacing Lamb’s bat with Gallo’s looks like a downgrade to me, but the bright side is that he’s a 2 time Gold Glove outfielder. At worst, he’s gonna go yard from time to time and play great defense. A very solid 4th outfielder, a Joc Pederson with a glove.
I’ll be disappointed if this is all we do, but it’s starting to look that way.
The Padres improved at several positions. They went from pretender to contender. The Braves weren’t as good as us last year, but they still beat us. The Giants weren’t as good, but they put us in a bad position by playing over their heads.
At the least, this makes the rest of the season way more exciting. We still have all of our prospects, so…

And Heyman tweets that the Dodgers will pay the nearly $4 million remaining on Gallo’s 2022 salary. Head scratcher move. If we need a LH pinch hitter with power but who doesn’t strike out as much as Gallo we have Rios returning soon. I just don’t get this move, not just because Gallo sucks but because he will also take a position on the 26 man roster that needs to remain open for the return of CT3, Rios and potentially pushes Outman back to OKC.
Perhaps there is another move or two for AF but this one just makes no sense at all to me. Not impressed.

I’m confused about acquiring Gallo, and paying his salary. He is a .201 lifetime hitter who hits some HRs but strikes out a lot.
Don’t we have enough guys like him in Cody and Max? Now we have 3 guys who can hit HRs but not bat over .200. What’s up with this?

Gallo’s career line. .201/.301/.417 with 170 HR’s and 991 K’s in 8 seasons. He has never hit above .253 in his entire career. He did that in 2019. He has already struck out 106 times this season. just what they need, another whiff machine.

It’s been said that 3 other teams were interested in Gallo, Brewers, Padres and Rays. There must be SOMETHING of interest about Gallo.

Soon to be 80, I have been around the block a few times! A Dodger fan since 1951, I still remember that year & the statement “The Giants is dead!”. Yes we have a big lead on SD, but there are still lots of games to be played. I don’t want to have to use that statement from the early 1950’s , “Wait til next year!”. Keep the prospects, play with what you’ve got.
I for one am very happy with the news coming down the pipe today.
Don’t want Soto and the money it would take to pay him…..so now we can give it to Tre Turner.
And I’m very excited to see all these hot prospects you guys have been touting and following can have their chance to wear Dodgers Blue. Especially glad not to trade any of our young pitchers plus James Outman.
For the record, I don’t worry about other teams…they have a right to improve too. Be glad there isn’t a salary cap like there is one for football or hockey. Congrats to the Padres and Yankees for making moves to improve their chances to make it to the big dance. I hope you both watch LA hoist the trophy high again though.

UPDATED DEAL: Minor underpay by San Diego. This is more reasonable.
We’ve removed Hosmer temporarily because he hasn’t approved the deal from his side (he has a no-trade clause that includes the Nationals). If he is included, the Padres will cover the $39M he’s owed from 2023-25. Since we had Hosmer at -35, that’s a net positive addition of $4M to their package.
If he does not approve it, the deal will still go through without him, at which point the $4M net will be removed. Wouldn’t change the parameters of the deal substantially either way, from a value standpoint.
Personally, I still think it’s surprising the Nats thought this offer was the best one, but at least it’s reasonable now.
They may want to keep prospects, first because they’re so good and also because they’re so much cheaper, so they can continue to pay established stars millionaire salaries, and that could mean Trea will be a Dodger for several years.
Trea, Betts, Freeman, Smith and possibly Bellinger and Muncy recover at least a little of the level they have had, and Lux is getting better and better every day, this lineup will be much more powerful than others, which only have 3 or 4 strong players, only They would look for a LF or give Thompson a chance for more continuity, or Outman himself, and Taylor to return to his utility job.
I don’t know why, but I feel that many are worried, feeling as if SD were already champion today, come on, first they have to play the games, then qualify for the playoffs, then beat not only the Dodgers, but also the Mets, Braves, Cardinals, then to Houston, Yankees, that is, a single player to another team and many already feel defeated
How sad I am for those who already feel defeated, long before a single inning has been played tonight.

Between their aggressiveness, and the Braves resigning of Riley and the corresponding moves. Both the Padres and Braves should be a example for other mid and small market teams about how to be well-run and aggressive.

dodgers must be reall sky high on Cartaya, Miller , Vargas that they would not even include them in a potential trade for Soto. If you do not include them in a trade for Soto you will not include them for anybody else too. Exception maybe Ohtani .

J.D Martinez and maybe John Screiber would be more than fine, but I doubt Boston wants to trade Schreiber, if not, then Eovaldi? And voila, that’s all it takes!
They would definitely not cost high level prospects and could help a lot, experience and good numbers, nothing spectacular, but effective!
Eovaldi could be a good closer in the playoffs, at least more reliable than Kimbrel

* Watching Freddie go the other way is a hitting clinic every day. Maybe the math still says it works but I can’t figure out why teams continue to shift the guy. I like Jessica’s report about how he takes BP. He never hits on the field where he could be enticed to get infatuated with hitting balls over the fence. Instead he works of the far less glamorous skill of hitting balls where he wants to; like grounders right at the make believe shortstop who isn’t there. Why does no one else learn that? Instead we’ll get rule changes. And I think BP on the field, the Old Fashion Way, is practically useless this day and age any way. But that’s a conversation for another time.
* Many years ago during my playing days, I had the great fortune to meet and watch a 60 year old man take BP. The Cardinals roving hitting instructor was Joe “Ducky” Medwick. Joe had won the MVP and Triple Crown with the Red Birds in 37 and was a Dodger in 1940. His story is interesting and something Bear might report on someday. Anyway, Ducky would occasionally get in the cage as a 60 year old and take some swings. He would hit 2 over third, 2 over short, second and first 2 gappers to each side. He hit line drives placed around the diamond and called it a deal after 12 swings. A piece of bat control art, it was. And it’s etched in my memory forever.
* I haven’t paid attention since he was a White Sox but Yermin Mercedes is a beast. Just a big man. He needs a bigger uni but he isn’t just a fat guy. He has some guns and thighs. I wouldn’t want to take him on in a football game.
* Nice to see Muncy run into one. While the results aren’t there yet, he’s swinging better.
* Despite the dinger to Flores, I thought Chris Martin looked okay. He sure is tall. He comes in with 6 reported pitches. If he sticks around long I bet he won’t have 6. More like 3. Pick the 3 best; One that goes left. One that goes right. And one that drops, stops or hops.

If you read how Keith Law ranked the TOP 4 Dodger Prospects (all 4 in the TOP 36), you should understand why AF doesn’t have to do anything.
The #1 or the #2 seed in playoffs?
As baseball will NOT reseed I really think its better to get the #2 seed in the NL.
Would you rather play Brewers Vs Cards winner or Braves vs SD winner???
As it stands right now the #2 seed will play winner of Brewers and the #6 seed; whoever that may be. The 1 Seed would play ATL or SD, as it stands today.
The key is obviously to get the first round bye but as it stands right now I’d take that #2 seed vs the #1. Of course getting HFA in the NLCS would be nice too.
We should have had it last year based on record. I do think Travel was a factor in that series as well as Scherzer being a wuss.

I did a post about Sot’s value a couple of weeks ago and pegged him around 83.55 as his true value. The Padres traded away 108.30 in order to get him and Josh Bell. I was way closer to his real value than the Trade Simulator in the end.
Just thought I’d pat myself on the back on that one.
The Dodgers could have traded Cartaya, Busch and Miller to get to roughly the same value. I’m glad they didn’t.
We don’t get Juan Soto and I feel pretty good about that. I still think the Dodgers make a move or two.
All these prospects just to send Eric Hosmer out of San Diego. He still has to agree to the trade, according to Ken Rosenthal. Wow. Hosmer in the driver’s seat. The signing that just keeps on giving.
Short term, next two or three years, this deal helps the Padres, maybe even puts them into the World Series. But the Dodgers are still the class of the NL. This season and well into the future.
Now, extend Trea Turner.
Padres lineup has gotten a LOT better with this trade. Make no mistake about it, this team is armed and dangerous for a run at the WS title not only for this year but the next 3 years too.
All three of their big guns still very young , Hader the stopper in the pen plus a strong rotation. And to get Bell on top , man oh man, that completely has changed their team in a span of 24 hours.
Say what you will about Preller and the Padres but he got balls.

Hosmer has 10 team no-trade clause, with Nats on list. He hasnt signed off but cant see that holding up trade. Hope AF has something up his sleeve. usually doesnt get upstaged.

I care about the Dodgers players and not about the other teams, the players from other teams are the ones who care about the Dodgers!
That money can and should be invested in Turner.
This forum is about Dodgers, not about other teams, Soto was not and will not be the only player traded, do not give it more importance than it could have, it’s done, turn the page and move on.
So, in the end, the Trade Simulator is way off on Soto’s value. The Padres got a huge shot in the arm for their offense and was able to unload a bad Hosmer contract. Soto will fit right in with Machado and Tatis as the most ridiculous players in the game, as far as causing scenes on the field goes.
I honestly don’t know WTF the Nats are thinking on this one. Gore is 23, injured and wasn’t very good this year, he’s no sure thing. Abrams was probably called up too early at just 21, he’s struggled so far, another no sure thing. The other three are all about as young as you can get, all not sure things.
In the end, it looks like Soto was worth 4 top prospects, (They got 5, but had to include Bell) certainly not the six that people were predicting. This is a good trade for the Padres, no doubt about it. And it’s the best chance they have at competing with the Dodgers this year. Soto, Machado, Tatis and Bell is a very good middle of the order.

I wonder what our best offer was. Although I’m relieved that we didn’t get him.
I’m glad we didn’t mortgage the farm for Soto. The NL West will continue to go through LA even with the acquisition of Soto. Their big three of Machado, Tatis and Soto are good but I’ll take our big three of TT, Mookie and Freddie any day and twice on Sunday.
This is going to be one intense NL playoffs come October, wow!

Very nice article Old Bear. I’ve read about that game a few times over the years and it still amazes me. I don’t remember how many pitches were thrown, but it was in the hundreds. Maybe you have that info in your research notes. One thing you didn’t mention was that Boston had Sunday off because at that time the law didn’t allow MLB to be played on Sundays. While Brooklyn was riding trains and playing an extra inning game on Sunday, Boston was just relaxing. Man, what a rough weekend for the Dodgers (Robins).
The Padres and Nationals are in agreement on a deal that sends Soto and first baseman Josh Bell to San Diego, Morosi reports. San Diego will send back rookie shortstop C.J. Twins get closer Lopez from the Orioles according to ESPN.
The Baltimore Orioles are contending for a wild-card spot this season but that hasn’t stopped them from acting like sellers at the trade deadline. A day after trading Trey Mancini to the Houston Astros, the Orioles are finalizing a trade to send closer Jorge Lopez to the Minnesota Twins, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
The Orioles will receive four minor league pitchers: left-hander Cade Povich, right-handed reliever Yennier Cano, right-hander Juan Nunez and left-hander Juan Rojas, sources tell ESPN.
Lopez has 19 saves and is 4-6 with a 1.68 ERA. He has 54 strikeouts in 48⅓ innings pitched.

The Pablo Lopez thing is fascinating to me. He’s legit, and he’s getting better.
On our team, he’d be a 4, which is absurd for his talent. I would give up Bobby Miller for him (though I’d rather trade Pepoit and others before Miller). Bobby Miller’s ceiling is probably that equal to Pablo Lopez, so I’ll take the sure thing now.

Great win for the Dodgers last night. Not only did Outman get on base every time up, but he made a really good catch in left.
So the Dodgers have a two prong approach today, according to Jack Harris of the LA Times. Juan Soto, obviously, and Miami right hander Pablo Lopez. They are also interested in Marlins reliever Anthony Bass.
Harris also points out there has been growing optimism in the Dodgers organization the last few days regarding acquiring Soto.
It’s funny, but I have mixed reactions to the potential trade. The prospect cost will be really high.I won’t be disappointed if the Dodgers don’t make a big deal.
Maybe I value the prospects too high.
No question Soto would make the Dodgers better for the remainder of this year and the next two. It would also keep him from going to San Diego and Brandon Gomes said the organization can do a big deal and still have a strong system.

Not going to worry about things over which I have no control aka trades. Well Will Smith will only get to face Will Smith again this year if the Dodgers meet the Astros in the World Series. Smith dealt to Houston for Odorizzi. Cardinals traded for Quintana. Their staff is really beat up. I wonder how the Rangers are feeling about all the money they spent so they could be 10 games under .500 after 102 games. Looks like the Angels will move Syndergaard before the deadline. He is owed about 7.5 mil for the rest of the year.
So far I don’t see any of the players who have been traded as game changers with the exception of Montas and Christian Vazquez the others have bad to mediocre numbers including Chris Martin the new Dodgers.

I’m a little apprehensive and nervous about a Soto trade. I don’t want to give up too much. And by too much, I mean Lux, Miller, Cartaya. and possibly May. I would also hate to give up a package like Miller, Cartaya, Busch and Vargas.
Heaney is still really dirty relying basically on two pitches, unless you count that single changeup he threw last night. It’s amazing to watch. The fastball wasn’t all that fast, just one over 94 MPH. The slider is absolutely deadly.

Who needs Soto when you’ve got The Caveman!?!? A single, a double and a walk with two more runs scored. He got pretty lucky with the double, hell it hit Yaz’s glove, right in the palm. Just 78 MPH off the bat. Makes up for Belli who hits the ball harder in 3 AB’s and has nothing to show for it.
What happened to Logan Webb? He’s really overrated. Like most of the Giants last year, they cumulatively had a miracle season last year by having just about everyone punch over their weight. Maybe Farhan isn’t the genius everyone thought he was. Maybe Kapler isn’t the genius everyone thought he was. They should be packing bags and posting the “For Sale” sign right about now as they dropped under 500 and their top prospects are at the lower levels of the minors. They won’t have anything going on for at least a few more years.
So far, the Yankees are winning the trade deadline. They needed Montas as Severino is now out for most likely the end of the year having been transferred to the 60 day IL. They also added a couple of bullpen arms and a good contact bat in Benintendi to solidify their outfield.
The Padres traded away yet another starting pitcher that was once one of their top prospects. Prospect rankings seemed to over exaggerate the Padres stacked farm system from a few years ago.
The Braves and Astros were busy overnight. The Braves added Robbie Grossman from the Tigers for some outfield depth as well as Jake Odorizzi from the Astros for the other Will Smith. The Astros nabbed Christian Vazquez from the Bo-Sox.
The Pirates sold high on Jose Quintana shipping him to the Cardinals who desperately need starting pitching.
What a game. Thanks Bear. Outman starting to remind me of Bellingers call up. Just too good to send back. How fun would it be to be a fly on AF’s wall today. What he’s willing to give up and what Washington wants. I think it would take Lux, Cartaya, Miller, Pages plus 2 more in the 10-20 range. I think that’s too rich for AF’s blood.

Dodgers Interested In Pablo Lopez

Reports from earlier this week suggested the Marlins were “no longer dismissing calls” (in the words of Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald) about Pablo Lopez’s availability, and thus it isn’t surprising that the aggressive Dodgers have reached out. Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports that Lopez is among the many players the Dodgers have discussed as tomorrow’s trade deadline looms.
The Twins and Cardinals have also been linked to Lopez in trade rumors, and given Lopez’s value as both an immediate rotation boost and a longer-term answer, it’s probably safe to guess that just about every contender has checked in with Miami general manager Kim Ng. Of course, since Lopez is controlled via arbitration through the 2024 season, he has a ton of value to the Marlins as well, particularly since Miami has enough talent on the roster that they’re surely aiming for a return to contention in 2023.
That means that if the Marlins did move Lopez, it would very likely be for players who are ready to contribute in the big leagues right away, as opposed to just intriguing prospects. Since the asking price for Lopez is sure to be huge, not many teams could necessarily meet the Marlins’ demands….but the Dodgers could certainly be one of those clubs, given their deep farm system.
I expect the Dodgers to acquire Soto, but I don’t think it’s necessary. I also expect one of Miller or Cartaya to be included in the deal and possibly Outman going out as well. Don’t think the Nats will want to take on CT3’s contract so he’s not an option to be included, but I can see a cost-controlled player like Lux to be included in the deal. I think the deal might look something like this:
Miller, Outman, Knack, Vargas, Bruns or Grove and Lux for Soto. Like I said, I don’t want to see it, but if Soto helps win a WS all will be forgotten about the talent we gave up to get him.
To name just a few in the last several years the Astros’ got Verlander, the Cubs got Chapman, the Royals got Cueto and Zobrist, the Giants got Peavy and Pence on their drive to the WS. All had to give up some good talent to get the veteran who put them over the top and if the Dodgers hoist a WS trophy this November and have Soto for at least two more years it will be worth it.
T-minus 10 hours and counting.
The way Soto has been hitting this season, it doesn’t scare me, and Hader, well, he’s not the same as other seasons, I think his ERA is higher than Kimbrel, only if they are winning it might be difficult to have to face him in the 9 inning…
SD is not the one to worry about!
I’m more concerned about Muncy, Bellinger, Taylor, Kershaw, Kimbrel, Roberts and the rest of the DODGERS team.

The more I read and hear the more I think they will. With SD getting Hader and making a push for Soto plus getting back Tatis jr. they would be a hard out in the playoffs.
